Skin Lesions Q & A

What is a skin lesion?

A skin lesion is any lump, bump, growth, or ulcer that develops on your skin. Common types of skin lesions include:

  • Moles
  • Actinic keratosis
  • Lipoma
  • Cyst
  • Melanoma
  • Squamous-cell carcinoma

Dr. Brahmbhatt, along with your dermatologist, can help identify the type of lesion you have and work with you on developing the best course of action.

What is a lipoma?

A lipoma is a cystlike growth that develops under your skin and is filled with fat. They usually develop on the neck, shoulders, back, belly, or thighs. You might have only one or you might have several.

Lipomas aren’t cancerous, but they can be uncomfortable, especially if they grow over a nerve. In many cases, you don’t have to do anything for your lipoma, but they can be surgically removed. Dr. Brahmbhatt is a general surgeon who can remove your lipoma with minimal scarring. Once removed, lipomas aren’t likely to grow back.

How are skin cysts removed?

A skin cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops under your skin. They’re usually harmless, but they can be embarrassing for some people. Your cyst might go away on its own, however, Dr. Brahmbhatt can drain or remove your cyst to improve your appearance. While cyst drainage is an effective treatment for your skin cyst, it might not prevent your cyst from coming back.

What can I expect during removal of melanoma?

Melanoma is the rarest form of skin cancer, but the most dangerous because it can grow quickly and invade other parts of your body. Surgery is the primary treatment for all stages of melanoma.

The procedure is done under general anesthesia to reduce discomfort. During the surgery, Dr. Brahmbhatt removes the cancerous lesion along with some of your healthy tissue. If needed, he will place a skin graft, which is a portion of skin he’s taken from another part of your body, to close the wound.

More than likely, you will need chemotherapy after your melanoma has been surgically removed.

No matter the type or cause, if you have a skin lesion you’d like removed, Dr. Brahmbhatt can expertly take care of it. Call RR Surgical Associates today for a consultation, or book an appointment online.
